How does scrap metal collection work?

Short answer: you describe your scrap, get a rough quote, then a pickup is arranged. Payment happens after the metal is weighed and checked. For bigger jobs and a demolition, an electrical rewire, a farm clean up, it's worth calling ahead so the right vehicle and enough hands turn up.

What affects scrap metal prices in NSW?

Short answer

The metal type, how pure it is, current market rates, and how much sorting or cleaning you've already done.

Generally, non ferrous metals like copper and brass are worth more per kilogram than ferrous metals like steel, because they take more energy to mine and process and stay in high demand. Within one metal type, purity matters too — clean, bare copper wire is worth more than the same weight of insulated cable, because the insulation has to come off before the copper can be recycled.

Exact prices aren't listed here because they shift with global markets, sometimes week to week. A dealer can only give you a real number once they know the metal type, rough weight and condition. If you want current pricing, it's more reliable to just call and ask than to trust a figure you saw somewhere else online, since those go stale fast.

What NSW law requires when you sell scrap metal

Scrap metal dealers must not carry on a business of dealing in scrap metal without the business being registered under the Act, and heavy penalties apply for breaching the legislation. Registered dealers are prohibited from paying for scrap metal with cash, cheque payable to cash, or in kind with goods or services, are prohibited from buying vehicle parts that don't display identifying details such as a VIN, chassis or engine number, and must keep a record of each transaction, including details of the person selling the scrap metal.

  • Bring valid photo ID to the transaction.
  • Expect to give payment details, like a bank account, instead of getting cash in hand.
  • Don't be surprised if a legitimate dealer asks where a large amount of copper came from — that's the law, not the dealer being difficult.
